Root Canals to Repair Teeth

A root canal, otherwise known as endodontic treatment, is used to relieve symptoms like pain and swelling. By removing the decay and bacteria from the inner tooth, your dentist can help halt the spread of infection and restore the healthy portion of the tooth.

Once the damaged nerves and tissue have been removed, you should find relief from the discomfort, and your natural tooth will be healthy once again. Along with treating the present symptoms, a root canal can also limit the need for more extensive dental work in the future.

Many patients find the root canal treatment process pain-free, and with proper care, most teeth that have had root canal treatment can last a lifetime.

What to Expect During a Root Canal

Your dentist will begin the root canal procedure by applying a protective sheet to the area. This is to isolate the tooth and keep it clean during treatment.

The top of the tooth will then be opened, and very small tools will be used to clear away any infected tissues, blood vessels and nerves. During this step, the canals will be opened and shaped in preparation for filling.

Once the canals are clear, they will disinfect the inner chamber and fill it with medicated material to prevent infection and seal the tooth. Once the root canal is complete, your dentist will complete the treatment with a restorative option like a crown. This will protect the treated area and strengthen your tooth.
